I've also been remiss in linking to "A Water Sacrifice," my second drabble to appear at Specklit.

I hope you enjoy them both. I enjoyed writing them very much.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-32950073884887082362015-02-08T08:41:00.002-08:002015-02-08T08:41:59.115-08:00"Old Haunts" at Specklit, and a Little Blog Housekeeping"Old Haunts" went up at Specklit on January 23. They're publishing another drabble of mine on Feb. 18, and have been a true pleasure to work with. "Old Haunts" started out as a one-sentence story, but I think the punctuation has much improved it. :-)

In other news, I added a "Follow by Email" option to my blog. It is truly embarrassing how long it took me to figure out that I could do that, but now we're good!

Thanks for reading, everybody!

P.S. I appreciate the recent warm comments, but am having trouble convincing blogger to publish comments of my own. So I'll just say thank you here! Thank you!
This is a little bit of a departure for me, since it's not fantasy or science fiction. I wrote it based on an old first line I had jotted down in a notebook years ago. I hope you enjoy it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-55643213735455043982014-11-30T16:16:00.005-08:002014-11-30T16:16:58.426-08:00"Black Friday" at Flash Fiction OnlineMy story, "Black Friday," is live at Flash Fiction Online this month (part of their "Death Comes for Flash Fiction" issue). I think I've mentioned before how much I love working with these folks. This story went through a bunch of revisions, getting passed back and forth between me and Suzanne until it communicated what she wanted to see in it. I'm always pleased to work with careful editors; I think it stretches me as a writer, to add that collaborative piece of it, and I certainly learn from that kind of detailed feedback!

"Black Friday" is my version of vampires. It's...a little different.
They chose this line as the pull quote: "Something sat in the rugmaker's belly, small and solid and chill, and her husband's songs ceased to warm it."

This is one of my favorite of my stories, and I hope you'll stop over to read it. I love secondary world fantasy, and Beneath Ceaseless Skies has been one of my favorite sources of short fiction for some time. I don't write as much of the subgenre as I read, but whenever I do complete a short story that fits the bill I send it to Beneath Ceaseless Skies first.

"The Rugmaker's Lovers" took several years from the day I started it to its publication date. I hope I've become more efficient since then, but seeing something that I loved and struggled with for so long finally "in print," so to speak, is a great feeling.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-51221941942314024902014-10-18T14:35:00.002-07:002014-10-18T14:35:56.172-07:00"Speaking Up" at 4 Star StoriesThis month I have two publications to announce. I'm doing it in two separate posts because I like to keep things neat like that.

I've fallen a few days behind on these, but I am pleased to announce that 4 Star Stories chose to publish "Speaking Up" in their most recent issue. This one's a little different for me. It's a sci-fi story from a child's perspective, and I was very happy that it found at home at 4 Star Stories.

I have been writing along, although my submissions have slowed. I need to pick those back up, soon, as almost every accepted piece has now been published and almost every piece out on submission has come back to me. I'm looking forward to restarting the adventure!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-88867575327932974842014-08-05T03:47:00.001-07:002014-10-18T14:24:30.856-07:00"The Love Letter" at Daily Science FictionThis morning my flash story, "The Love Letter" went out to Daily Science Fiction's mailing list.

The first time I wrote this, I had the wrong ending. I got clever, and
thought I would Say Something about Writing. Then I sent it to the wrong
market, where they pointed out the ending problem and rejected it (so
maybe it was the right market, in its own way). The story is a little
quieter now, and I think really, like it always wanted to be, it's just
about a couple of guys.
I enjoyed the experience, and found everyone involved to be extremely professional. Penumbra is, however, the only place I've published so far that is behind a paywall--which is to say, they don't give away their fiction.

Except, right now, they do! Not all of it, but they've recently revamped their site and in order to introduce new readers of to their brand, they're offering their first twelve issues for free! (These are from 2011 and 2012, scroll down the page to find them.)

I highly recommend checking them out. :-) And now, it doesn't cost you a dime.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-53412803202630758722014-05-18T04:37:00.003-07:002014-05-18T04:39:22.677-07:00InterviewMy first interview is up! And it's a bit...well... here.

Unlikely Story Journal published an issue of terrible flash fiction in April. I wrote Why, Ethan, Why?!?!? :( mostly on a lunch break at work, and it turned out it was just about the worst anyone could do. I always knew I had potential.

Then they decided to send us terrible interview questions. I sent them some terrible answers. You know, like you do. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-58423600492366688012014-04-06T06:34:00.002-07:002014-04-06T06:34:26.336-07:00"I Imagine Myself as Rath Ducha" at Flash Fiction Online"I Imagine Myself as Rath Ducha" is in this month's issue of Flash Fiction Online. I love this publication--they're a breeze to work with, and there's even art specific to my story! This is my second time publishing with them, and my first story there, "Zombie March," is probably still my most-commented on work and one of my personal favorites.

This particular story, like many of mine, was started by a themed issue that I never submitted to. In this case, I was looking at The First Line Literary Journal and got inspired. I've never published with them, but I do love their open-ended prompts!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-22548865824308347422014-04-01T15:38:00.004-07:002014-04-06T06:27:25.348-07:00Oh, DearNow the world knows what my rough drafts look like...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-38268682073812656772014-03-08T09:14:00.000-08:002014-03-08T09:15:10.114-08:00"After Closing" at Enchanted SparkMelinda Moore, a fellow writer of short fantasy, maintains an active blog and website called Enchanted Spark. As part of the site, she runs a short story contest every two months called the "Photo Flare Contest." She posts photos, and submitted stories must incorporate the photos or be inspired by them. In February, she added a flash contest running concurrently, and I won it! "After Closing," my winning story, is a light piece about gremlins living an an amusement park. Check it out!
Melinda hosts weekly check-ins on her blog for writers wishing to report their word-count and commiserate with or inspire each other. I'm very excited about this publication. I love the story, of course. I love the art they chose for the magazine cover--and I got the cover spot! I had no idea I was going to, and I'm over the moon about it.

As an added bonus, I share the table of contents of this issue with Michael Haynes, one of my writing role models and the editor of Kazka Press's 713 flash contest. His 2012 and 2013 year-end reviews on his blog have provided a lot of inspiration for me. I'm hoping at the end of this year I'll have something similar to post!

Penumbra also asked me to to a guest post on their blog. "A Moment in Heaven with Brynn MacNab" describes my version of a special heaven for writers--and my first ever guest blog post!

Penumbra has been a dream to work with, and I sincerely hope this is the first of many publications with them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-38249799852712157052014-02-15T06:07:00.000-08:002014-12-06T06:02:52.096-08:00"Three Nights" at Kazka Press

My story "Three Nights" is live today at Kazka Press! This is my
third publication with them, and on each occasion both Michael Haynes,
the editor, and L. Lambert Lawson, the publisher, have been delightfully
easy to work with. They also put out, in my opinion, a consistently
good publication. I've just started reading this month's other stories, and am thoroughly enjoying them so far.

"Three Nights" was written in direct response to Kazka's theme for
February--Dreams. The monthly contest has a 1,000 word limit, and it was
quite a challenge to write a dream-centered story that worked (avoiding
the dreaded "it was all a dream" ending) while coming in under that
limit. I started as the narrator does, with the image of the house in
the woods. I hope you enjoy it.

Today my story, "Rob Lithim Used to be Two People" went out to
Daily Science Fiction's e-mail list. (<strike>It won't go live on their site for
another week, but I'll post a link when it does.</strike> Linked!)

This story is one of my personal favorites. I wrote it years ago,
during one of those times when I was not really submitting things. I
remember revisiting it a few times, though at this point I couldn't say how
substantive each of those revisions was.

I intended "Rob Lithim" initially as a sequel to a longer work,
possibly full-length, a more conventional quest story involving a group
of friends in a world where superpowers are common. But the sequel just
interested me so much more than the original story that I hared off and
haven't finished the quest story yet--and of course, now we all know how
it ends.

This is my second story published by Daily Science Fiction. ("The Left Side of Your Lover's Broken Face" appeared there in May of 2013.) I
hope to see many more. Daily Science Fiction is among my favorite
markets, both to read and to write for. Their slush process is clean, concise, and reasonably-paced, and that same efficient professionalism
has in my experience continued through publication and payment.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-57998448509555908162014-02-02T06:51:00.001-08:002014-02-15T08:51:56.763-08:00W1S1 January- Last Minute NotesI count my writing weeks Sunday-through-Saturday, since the W1S1 group does their check-in post on Sundays. So, I'm going to go ahead and count February first as part of the fifth week of January (as they do). Since I'm doing weekly goals, I think this is logical, although I did have to consider it. Obviously, when I posted on Friday I had a different opinion. But since I'm counting Saturday with last week, I need to update my stats because...I got two more acceptances yesterday!

Or at least, I'm tentatively counting the second one. The editor accepted a flash piece as a reprint, but it's actually a previously unpublished piece. I wrote back to clarify, and I'm betting that it will be fine.

Happy January, everyone! How do you track your stats? Would you put Feb 1 news with January because of the way the week falls, or do you go strictly by months?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06143288281687788352noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7630591181622040999.post-27128972727498739282014-01-31T17:43:00.000-08:002014-01-31T17:51:43.617-08:00Write 1/Sub 1 JanuaryThis year I've joined the group over at Write 1 Sub 1. I'm doing the weekly challenge, writing and submitting a story each week (although not always the same story). "Challenge" is definitely the word for it! If you're looking for a boost to your motivation and productivity, I recommend hanging around with these folks. It's the perfect blend of scary, inspiring, and encouraging, and there are writers at many different levels of skill and experience among the regulars there.

I managed to keep up this month, with 5 stories written and 6 submitted for the first time. Breaking those down a little, I completed rough drafts of 3 flash pieces and 2 short stories, and submitted 4 flash pieces and 2 short stories.

The rejections keep rolling in, as ever, although they haven't been particularly heavy this month. I attribute this in part to the fact that I got back into serious submitting in December after a bit of a hiatus, and with some markets that means I can't expect to hear back just yet. I've also probably been noticing the rejections a lot less than I normally do, as I've had an unusual number of story acceptances--3 for the month, 2 flash and one a bit longer. I look forward to posting more about those stories as they come out.

Three actually doesn't sound like such an impressive number, now that I write it out. But for me it's huge, considering that I only had three stories published in 2012 and 2013 combined!

I also had a story published this month.
